R4 card has lots of good functions and one of those is action reply. In order to use the Action Replay function on the R4, you will need to download the R4DS Cheat Code Editor. Before using the R4 card Cheat Code Editor, it is a good idea to get the latest firmware for the R4.
How to use the R4DS Cheat Code Editor

Starts from the v1.08 official version, the R4 supports Action Replay function, simultaneously supports the official Action Replay database and the user database. The R4 Action Replay Cheat uses for the creation and edition of user’s database, either supports the user manual input or XML files import.
Let’s go through it step by step: First, create a new cheat database, and delete the current data (before deleting there will be a prompt about whether to preserve). Then, open existing cheat database. If there are some cheat codes in the current database, the opened data will be added behind the cheat codes in the current database. This function can be use to merge of several databases. Save the current cheat database to the user database. Import the cheat code of the XML file, if there are some cheat codes in the current database, the imported data will be added behind these cheat codes. Exit the current application program. Add a game item behind the current database. Follow by add a folder item behind the current game; the R4 Action Replay only supports the level one folder structure. Which R4 cards can support the new v1.4.1u firmware? Recently received lots of queries about the new firmware which was recently released by Nintendo last Sept. On hands, we have imported couple cards can work on new v1.4.1 firmware and we also well tested they really work. My DSi console on hands also accidentally being updated to the new firmware version 1.4.1, so I am pretty sure now, lol. First, New R4i-SDHC, it is the card the R4 team made and manufactured after Sept 23. It also carries WiFi feature and works on new v1.4.1u firmware DSi and DSi XL.
R4i-Gold Elite card also works on new firmware v1.4.1, and I heard from the R4i Gold team they made a break-through on the new firmware. Personally, I like Supercard DS Two which looks very robust and it is also well-tested on new firmware v1.4.1u. Moreover, as I know, you can also use a lower verion console i.e. DS Lite to update the Acekard 2i card then AK2i can support new 1.4.1 firmware.
R4 on my DSI says system error. Does this mean it is broken?

R4i card on your DSi shown system error which are some most common questions users may have. No worry, first got to find out what is the reason. First let me ask you were the cards working before? just not work today? or you never get it work with your dsi?
If it’s the first scenario, I guess you may accidentally have your dsi updated to the new firmware v1.4.1u recently released by Nintendo. As the existing card is for v1.4 firmware, if your dsi being updated to another firmware, need to get another card in support of new firmware.
If it’s second scenario, then may be the kernel not being loaded properly in your microSD? First you need to format your microSD before you load in the R4i kernel. And the latest system kernel for R4i-SDHC can be found on its official site: www.r4i-sdhc.com, go to the download tab, and you will see v1.26b (this is the latest one).
When you download it and copy to your microSD, remember to copy to the root directory of your microSD before inserting to your R4i.

To answer your 2nd question, would it need to upgrade… R4 card from time to time will release some kernel update which is kind of a refinement, most of the time, you don’t need to update it. But be careful of if a new firmware released by Nintendo like the recent one in Sept., not all of existing R4 cards can automatically support the new firmware. The recent firmware is V1.4.1U, some users accidentally be upgraded to this new firmware, the existing R4 card may not be able to use. However if you keep your DSi on V1.4 firmware then all R4 cards are good to use.
PS: Nintendo releases the new V1.4.1U firmware with the main purpose for anti privacy, nothing really upgraded. So you don’t necessary to update to it.
